The Teddy Bears for Troopers 2002 “Comfort Campaign” was a huge success thanks to the generosity of Florida Department of Transportation employees from District Four, the State Materials Office, Central Office and last, but certainly not least, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise employees, from both the Pompano Operations Center and Headquarters Offices in Orlando.
DOT Turnpike employees in Pompano Beach deliver bears to the FHP
Well over 600 teddy bears were collected and presented to Florida Highway Patrol Troop K troopers during this past holiday season. The 600 plus teddy bears that were collected will be used by troopers to allay fear in children that are involved in traffic accidents or domestic disputes at service plazas along Florida’s turnpike.
The bears are divided among Troop K Troopers who keep them in their patrol car trunks until needed. Troopers comment that it’s amazing how the bears dry the children’s tears and take away their fears. These teddy bears are handed out year-round, not only during the holiday season.
The program is the brainchild of DOT employee Suné Brandon, and marked the Turnpike’s fifth “Teddy Bears for Troopers” campaign. Every year, it just gets bigger and better. More than 3,300 bears have been donated since the inception of this program in 1998.
