Colonel Knight speaking about the importance of buckling up
Colonel Knight speaks about the importance of buckling up.

The largest safety belt enforcement crackdown of the year recently kicked off in Tallahassee, marking the beginning of the Click It or Ticket statewide traffic safety campaign, which runs from May 19 – June 1.

Dr. Jeff Runge, NHTSA Administrator

This two-week campaign represents a period of extra strict enforcement of Florida’s seat belt and child restraint laws. Florida’s state, county, and local law enforcement officers team up during this intensive campaign to encourage Florida’s motorists to buckle up over the extended Memorial Day blitz.

The primary goal of the Click It or Ticket campaign is to prevent deaths on Florida’s roadways. The campaign is two fold: first, it is centered around strong enforcement of the law, sending the very clear message that motorists who choose to break the law by not wearing a seat belt or restraining their children will receive a traffic citation. Second, it is designed to encourage the motoring public to take measures to protect themselves in the event of a traffic crash, and wearing a safety belt is the best way to do just that.

It is a fact that traffic in Florida increases significantly over the Memorial Day holiday period. This increase in traffic increases the likelihood that traffic crashes, which injure and kill hundreds of motorists every year, will go up during this peak holiday time. Therefore, law enforcement officers all across the state will increase their efforts to do all they can to prevent injury and loss of life by making sure motorists wear their safety belts and properly restrain their child passengers. It is a fact that safety belts save lives! It is estimated that if Florida could increase its annual seat belt usage rate from the current 75% to just 78%, over 100 lives could be saved this year alone!
