The award was given to a surprised Sergeant Johnson as he attended the Jackson County Law Enforcement Appreciation Ceremony held at the Sheriff’s Office in Marianna on May 7, 2003. The ceremony was sponsored by the Jackson County Crime Stoppers and the Marianna Optimist Club.
Sergeant Johnson received the award in recognition for his actions involving a bank robbery that occurred in Jackson County on December 27, 2002. Two armed men robbed the People’s Community Bank in Malone, Florida. A BOLO (be on the lookout) was broadcast describing the suspects and their vehicle. While Sgt. Johnson was conducting surveillance at the suspect’s residence, he spotted them driving by in their vehicle. Sgt. Johnson immediately attempted a felony traffic stop with the assistance of an FDLE agent. The suspects fled. Sgt. Johnson initiated a pursuit, during which time one of the suspects fired several gunshots at Sgt. Johnson from the fleeing vehicle.
Despite great personal danger, Sgt. Johnson continued to pursue the suspects until they crashed their vehicle. One of the suspects shot two more rounds at Sgt. Johnson, but suddenly turned the gun on himself before Sgt. Johnson could return any fire. The other suspect surrendered, and was placed under arrest.
