Trooper Lane
Trooper Melvin T. Lane

On March 18, 2003, Trooper Melvin T. Lane, Troop G-Ocala, arrested a woman for Grand Theft Auto and Resisting Arrest Without Violence. While investigating a traffic crash, Trooper Lane used his laptop computer to find out the vehicle involved in the crash had been reported stolen on March 13th. When asked about the stolen vehicle, the driver told Trooper Lane that her name was Janice Chang, and that she had purchased the vehicle from the owner.

Using his laptop, Trooper Lane discovered there was no record for a driver license for Janice Chang. When Lane ran the social security number the woman gave him through his laptop, he was able to retrieve a photo through the Department’s Driver and Vehicle Information Database, however, the photo was not that of the woman claiming to be Ms. Chang. When Trooper Lane questioned her further, the woman provided her true name and address. Trooper Lane then arrested Ms. Jennifer Dunford and transported her to the Marion County Jail.
