Lt. Burroughs encouraging teen drivers to wear safety belts
Lt. Mike Burroughs encourages teen drivers to wear safety belts.

Levy County - Just days before their high school prom, students at Chiefland High School in Levy County gathered to watch and learn as Lt. Mike Burroughs used one of FHPs rollover simulators to bring home the message that if "you drink and drive, you lose," and "safety belts save lives." Lt. Burroughs, Troop B Public Affairs Officer, conducted presentations for four separate classes of high school juniors and seniors.

The combination of listening to the safety talks and watching the unrestrained crash dummies get ejected from the rolling truck was enough to convince many students to use extra caution and wear their safety belts. Following each presentation, high school students signed Prom Promises to stay drug free during the upcoming prom weekend.

Charlotte County - A week before the prom at Lemon Bay High School, Lt. Mike Rushing and Corporal Ricky Wells-along with crash dummies, Vince & Larry-used the FHP rollover simulator to demonstrate seat belt safety for over 1,400 students. The demonstrations, coordinated by Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), were designed to send the message to students to use designated drivers and wear their safety belts during the upcoming prom and summer vacation. Sadly, Lemon Bay recently lost a student who was ejected from her vehicle in a traffic crash. The student might have survived if she had only been wearing her seatbelt.
