The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at the request of Lafayette County Sheriff (LCSO) Carson McCall, conducted a Highway Interdiction training course and enforcement detail in Lafayette County.

The training/enforcement detail was conducted on February 17-18, 2003, through FHP Contraband Interdiction Coordinator (CIP) Lieutenant Marty Duncan with the assistance of FHP-CIP Troopers Jimmy Davis, Jason Lemery, Michael Grider, and John Wilcox. After a day of in-class training, the LCSO Deputies teamed up with FHP-CIP members for a hands-on training/enforcement detail. In less than an hour, a traffic stop for a faulty equipment violation netted the arrests of three persons for possession of marijuana. One of the subjects agreed to cooperate and a search warrant was obtained for the residence where the marijuana had been purchased. Later that evening, the LCSO Deputies and the FHP-CIP members executed the search warrant. During the service of the warrant, one of the female residents attempted to destroy a large amount of marijuana by flushing it down the rear bathroom toilet. The marijuana was retrieved. Drug paraphernalia was also found and two persons at the residence were arrested for various drug charges. While at the residence, a pick-up truck pulled into the driveway, u-turned and sped away. FHP-CIP members proceeded after the vehicle and observed a small package being thrown from the interior of the truck to the roadway. The package was retrieved and found to contain marijuana. The driver of the truck was arrested on drug charges.

On day two, the enforcement detail met at the Sheriff’s Office at 9:00 A.M. for their patrol assignments. After several traffic stops, a vehicle stopped for a faulty equipment violation led to the driver’s arrest and the seizure of cocaine, marijuana, and $3,290 in drug money. It should be noted that the driver of the vehicle stopped at the residence of an employee who showed up within minutes to see what was going on. A drug sniff of that driver’s truck and another truck located on the property yielded his arrest and an additional seizure of cocaine, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. The arrests of both subjects resulted in the officers obtaining a search warrant for each driver’s residence. Later that evening, the LSCO Deputies and the FHP-CIP members executed the search warrants. The search of each residence netted the seizure of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The first day ended around 2:00 A.M. and yielded several traffic stops that subsequently resulted in the arrests of eight persons for various drug charges, outstanding warrants, and the execution of a search warrant. The final day concluded around 8:30 P.M. and yielded several traffic stops that subsequently resulted in the arrests of three persons for various drug charges and the execution of two search warrants. The two-day training/enforcement detail was a clear picture of how well two law enforcement agencies can work together. Both LCSO Sheriff McCall and FHP-CIP Lieutenant Duncan were extremely pleased with the training and subsequent enforcement statistics. It’s "looking beyond the ticket".
