Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary looks on
May 27th marked the conclusion of a massive Central Florida Law Enforcement effort entitled "OPERATION SUMMER HEAT", co-hosted by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol. Twenty plus law enforcement agencies from Orange, Osceola, Lake, Volusia, Seminole, Brevard, Marion, Polk, and Sumter Counties participated in the effort which began May 21st. Officers focused on a full crime spectrum including: traffic enforcement, drug interdiction, gang suppression, fugitive apprehension, and warrant service. The program was a vision of Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary.

In a press conference in Orlando on May 28th, Colonel Knight and Sheriff Beary announced the results at a press conference. Colonel Knight attributed the high law enforcement cooperation and visibility as the catalyst for the dramatic reduction in the holiday traffic death toll. Sheriff Beary warned the criminal element this law enforcement effort paid dividends in crime reduction as well. "This is the first of many such operations" Beary said. " We plan to have many more such initiatives and they will be done unannounced in order to catch the criminal element off guard" Beary concluded. Colonel Knight pledged FHP support and participation and said he will assist in enlisting law enforcement statewide.
