MADD reps and Col. Knight

During the recent legislative session, Florida’s Legislators passed the most comprehensive DUI legislation in Florida’s history. At a press conference this week on the steps of the old Capitol building, Colonel Chris Knight, joined Senator Locke Burt, District 16, Volusia County, Representatives Johnnie Byrd, District 62, Hillsborough County and David Simmons, District 37, Orange and Seminole Counties, along with Mothers Against Drunk Driving Executive Director, Andy Hindman to announce this monumental legislation.

One of the most important changes in the new law is the requirement of the mandatory placement of an ignition interlock device for a period of at least one year following a second conviction of driving under the influence. The other major change increased the penalty from a misdemeanor to a felony for the third conviction of a DUI. These new changes in Florida’s DUI laws validate law enforcement’s efforts and send the right message from Florida’s legislators that Florida is tough on those drivers who drink and drive!
