Trooper Frye
Trooper Fred Frye

Due to the lack of active, daytime road construction projects on state roads in the Miami-Dade County area, Troop E decided to add a twist to Operation Hard Hat. Troopers in Miami incorporated the same tactics as Operation Hardhat and put them to use in a school zone. Instead of a trooper dressed as a construction worker, Trooper Fred Frye was disguised as a School Crossing Guard, except that he was equipped with a laser device. Trooper Frye blended in by standing next to the real School Crossing Guard in an actual school zone. When a vehicle violated the school zone speed limit, Frye would measure their speed with the laser device and notify troopers waiting down the road.

Operation Crossing Guard has been a great success in Miami-Dade County. With extensive positive publicity, it has not only deterred drivers from speeding in school zones, but it also keeps drivers wondering if the School Crossing Guard they observe at the next school zone they drive through is really a Crossing Guard......or is it a trooper?
