Nationwide Insurance Company’s Regional Office in Gainesville recently invited Lt. Mike Burroughs to join them in reminding their employees to "Drive Safely to Work." Nationwide participated in the "Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) Drive Safely to Work Week" October 7-11, 2002.

Nationwide predicated Lt. Burroughs’ visit with the FHP Seat Belt Convincer by conducting an employee Seat Belt Use Survey. Those employees observed not wearing a seat belt were urged to visit the Seat Belt Convincer demonstration during the course of the day.

After capturing their attention with the FHP Seat Belt Convincer, Lt. Burroughs used DUI Vision Goggles to demonstrate the effects that alcohol has on a driver’s normal faculties. The DUI Vision Goggles simulate a .10% and .17% blood alcohol level when worn by a volunteer. Lt. Burroughs had the participants attempt to catch softball, throw a softball into a basket, and walk a straight line while wearing the goggles. The DUI Vision Goggles are a vivid reminder for drivers to wear their seat belts to be prepared for an impaired driver who may not be able to locate their side of the road.

Additionally, Lt. Burroughs had volunteers from Nationwide wear the "Vince and Larry" Crash Dummy costumes and roam the Nationwide facility to encourage employees to visit the Seat Belt and DUI Vision Goggle demonstrations.
