7 bundles of US Currency seized
On June 24, 2002, at 10:30PM, Sergeant Daniel Hinton observed a 1995 Kenworth tractor-trailer combination traveling at an excessive rate of speed for the existing weather conditions northbound on I-75 in Sumter County. The vehicle was stopped at the 331 milepost. Assisting were Trooper Michael Grider and Trooper John Wilcox. Subsequently, a canine sniff and physical search of the vehicle was conducted. The search revealed hidden compartments in the fuel tanks. The compartments contained a total of seven bundles of US Currency. Both the driver and passenger were arrested for felony possession of drug paraphernalia (concealed vehicle compartments). Agents from the US Drug Enforcement Administration were contacted to assist in processing the currency seizure. Due to the large amount of currency seized, and the late evening hour of the seizure, only two bundles were opened which indicated $10,000 per bundle. The total is estimated at $70,000. A final count will be recorded when all of the bundles are opened and counted by bank officials.
