Troop B’s Child Passenger Safety Program was highlighted recently at the Columbia County Fair held in Lake City from October 29 to November 3, 2002. Lt. Mike Burroughs, Troop B Public Affairs Officer, set up a Florida Highway Patrol display booth, and seized the opportunity to educate fair patrons about the dangers in transporting children without the proper use of child restraints. Lt. Burroughs, a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Instructor, was on-hand to answer parents’ questions regarding seat belts and child safety seats, as well as other Florida traffic laws and safety concerns.

With record attendance at this year’s fair, Lt. Burroughs used this opportunity to pass out brochures regarding Florida’s new “Move Over” Law to as many visitors as possible. Burroughs also prepared “goodie bags” with information and promotional items designed to remind Floridians about a variety of traffic safety issues. In addition, a collection of safety videos were played continuously on a TV designed to catch the attention of passersby.

It is no wonder Troop B received a First Place ribbon for their exhibit and display booth. “The booth was a terrific medium to educate the motoring public about the proper use of child restraint seats, seat belts, and Florida’s new “Move Over” law,” said Lt. Mike Burroughs. “We received a lot of positive comments from the citizens of Columbia County regarding the information available at our booth. It was a real hit!”
