FHPA Trooper Tony Conboy

Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary Trooper Tony Conboy III of Bradenton was recently named to an Advisory Committee that will be meeting in Alexandria, VA, in support of President Bush's new volunteer initiative, Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS).

Approximately 20 persons from around the nation were tapped by the U.S. Department of Justice to serve on the VIPS Advisory Committee. The goal of VIPS is to provide support for resource-constrained law enforcement agencies by tapping civilian volunteers to supplement their community's law enforcement professionals in order to free up officers for front line duty.

Conboy, who has been with the Auxiliary since 1996, will be representing the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary, one of the nation's largest volunteer police organizations with nearly 400 Auxiliary Troopers. Auxiliary Troopers in Florida bear arms and have the power to arrest violators when under the direction of a full-time trooper. In June, Conboy was honored by being named Florida’s Auxiliary Trooper of the Year. He is employed by the Manatee County Tax Collector's Office as the Director of Current Collections where he oversees the operations of four offices and 55 people.

In his 2002 State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush announced the creation of the USA Freedom Corps, which is an effort to foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility, building on the generous spirit of the American people. The Citizen Corps programs are part of the USA Freedom Corps initiative and share the common goal of helping communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to crime, natural disasters, and other emergencies. One of the Citizen Corps programs is VIPS -Volunteers in Police Service (www.policevolunteers.org). The VIPS program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice.
