March 14, 2002, became a milestone for the Florida Highway Patrol. Forty-three recruits, including one Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Compliance Officer, graduated from the Florida Highway Patrol’s 100th Basic Recruit Class (BRC) in a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Tallahassee/Leon County Civic Center that was attended by family, friends, and fellow troopers. In addition, over 50 retired FHP troopers and supervisors from all over the state traveled to Tallahassee to mark the special occasion.

But, the 100th BRC was unique in another way. The FHP Training Academy was selected as the first Law Enforcement Training Academy in Florida to deliver a new recruit training curriculum. The new curriculum centers on the "SECURE" problem-solving model, which was developed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. This training model is designed to influence an officer’s decision-making process in terms of SAFETY, ETHICS, COMMUNITY, UNDERSTANDING, RESOURCES, and EVALUATION. The new curriculum is intended to develop a more professional and experienced officer.
