Operation "Eye on You" was officially announced at a news conference in Miami on Thursday, August 30, 2001. This major traffic enforcement crackdown was spearheaded by Major David L. McCarter Jr., Troop E's commander. The enforcement campaign will run through January 1, 2002, encompassing the remaining holiday periods, as well as several Florida Buckle-Up waves.
The goal of the operation is to reduce the number of aggressive driving incidents, D.U.I. offenses, crashes, and fatalities in Miami-Dade County. It will also include an educational component designed to educate and alert the public about the dangers of not wearing safety belts or using child restraint devices. Overtime funds will be used to supplement the number of troopers on the roadways, significantly increasing the Patrol's presence on our highways.
Although the effort will be countywide, four roadways will be emphasized: S.R. 9A (I-95), S.R. 826 (Palmetto Expressway), S.R. 997 (Krome Avenue), and S.R. 5 (U.S.1 @ the 18 mile stretch leading to the Florida Keys).
