Colonel Chris Knight and
Lt. Colonel Larry Austin holding Chief Challenge award

On Tuesday October 30, 2001, The International Association of Chief's of Police recognized the Florida Highway Patrol for being the top State Police/Highway patrol Agency with 1000 + troopers for the year 2000. The I.A.C.P. "Chief's Challenge" Award recognizes local, county, state, and private organizations for what they do to keep highways and communities safe for motorists to travel.

DUI enforcement, speed enforcement, occupant restraint enforcement, aggressive driving enforcement strategies, public information/safety education programs, as well as other innovative programs are just some of the categories that are judged.

Each agency is judged according to agency size and the top three winners in each category are selected. All of the agencies compete for the "Clayton J. Hall Memorial Award" as well, which is a special award presented to the law enforcement agency that represents the "best of the best" in traffic safety. This award is presented to the overall BEST traffic safety program regardless of agency size and type.

The Florida Highway Patrol was selected for this prestigious award from over 60 other agencies that won in their respective categories. The men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol should be proud of their efforts in keeping the highway safe for the motoring public and those efforts haven't gone unnoticed. Because of those efforts, the Florida Highway Patrol IS the top traffic law enforcement agency in the Nation.
