To combat the increased incidences of commercial vehicle and cargo theft in Florida, the Motor Carrier Compliance Office has initiated a commercial vehicle and cargo theft recovery program with significant results. Since 2001, OMCC has recovered in excess of $19 million in stolen vehicles and cargo.
OMCC is a member of two major commercial vehicle and cargo theft task forces and works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as state and federal prosecutorial authorities.
The task forces that OMCC is affiliated with are:
The Tactical Operations Multi Agency Cargo Anti Theft Squad (TOMCATS) is comprised of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, which engage in complex investigations of organized groups who engage in the theft of commercial vehicles and cargo. TOMCATS is based in Miami-Dade County and has participation from law enforcement agencies based in Southeast Florida. TOMCATS recovers approximately $30 million in stolen property each year.
In operation since May of 2001, the SCVCTTF focuses on the theft of commercial vehicles and cargo through a multi-agency approach, teaming state and federal law enforcement agencies with sheriff's offices and local police departments to engage in proactive efforts to detect and apprehend truck and cargo thieves.
The SCVCTTF is governed by a steering committee made up of representatives of the Florida Sheriff's Association, FBI and various state and federal law enforcement agencies, including OMCC.
