Dear Colonel Knight and the FHP Family: I am saddened to hear of the death of Trooper Darryl Haywood. Such losses are hard to contemplate; however, I believe it can best be explained as an unselfish act of giving his life so that the citizens and visitors of Florida are protected from individuals who hold such reckless disregard for the motoring public. Additionally, I want to let you know that my agency is hosting a motorcycle ride in honor of several law enforcement officers that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our ride, the 2nd Annual Ofc. Melvin Collins Memorial Bike Ride was named after B.P.D. Ofc. Collins who was killed in the line of duty April 15, 2003, while preventing an armed robbery. He had only been with our department six (6) months. Anyway, our bike ride is going to be from Brunswick, Ga. to St. Augustine, Fla. We will be passing through several jurisdictions and felt it would be appropriate to honor those officers killed in these jurisdictions. Of course we couldn't list every name of every officer who died on the back of our event t-shirt so it was decided to list the name, agency and end of watch date of the last officer killed in the line of duty from these jurisdictions. We are proud and honored to be able to list Trooper Haywood on our event t-shirts. I don't anticipate the need for FHP to be involved in our ride but Nassau, Duval, and St. Johns County Sheriff's Department are providing escort through their jurisdictions. The only time we will be on the interstate, without an escort, will be a short distance from the Georgia / Florida line to the first exit at U.S. 17. That's where Nassau County will pick us up. I have know Darryl and his family since we were both little boys growing up in the Bronx New York. We had shared the honor of being best man at each others weddings and being godfather to each first born children. I had to smile when I read how Darryl could recognize the fire and police sirens as the passed by the houses along Grant and Morris Avenues. I can still remember playing hook and ladder 44 in his fathers house using two chairs and the ladder from he and David's bunk beds when we just children. I had recently lost touch with Darryl and his family over the past few years since his retirement from the NYPD and my relocating to Massachusetts with my family. We always had a special bond and I used to tell him that if I had not seen him in years, it was always as if it was just yesterday that I last saw him.
