Dear Colonel Knight and the FHP Family:
I am saddened to hear of the death of Trooper Darryl Haywood. Such losses are hard to contemplate; however, I believe it can best be explained as an unselfish act of giving his life so that the citizens and visitors of Florida are protected from individuals who hold such reckless disregard for the motoring public. There is no greater contribution and Trooper Haywood's death serves a constant reminder that the men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol are the first guardians of public safety and are front line soldiers in the State's efforts to provide peace, dignity and security to a state that welcomes all and strives hard to provide the highest level of protection to the public.
Colonel, thank you for the good work of the Florida Highway Patrol. Please pass on to the Haywood family, my deepest condolences and my appreciation as a citizen and former member of the Florida Highway Patrol. I will be with you and the family in thought and prayer as you celebrate the life of this Trooper and recognize him for the greatest contribution one can make - his life!
God Bless!
Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Billy Dickson

To The Family of Trooper Haywood:
Please accept our sincere condolensences. We share your pain and your sorrow. We also lost a dear family member, Trooper George "Andy" Brown this past April, thru similar circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this, your time of need. Nothing will every be able to replace your loss, but rest assure that God and the entire FHP family will guide you thru.
Greg & Linda Seifreit

Trooper Haywood's family including his Brothers and Sisters in the Law Enforcement community should be proud of his accomplishments. When a Fireman or Police officer leaves home his wife and children just say, " Daddy is at work today" never really knowing how many times during his tour he thinks of them, thinks of the danger he may have to face today , how many times he feels that uneasy feeling of knowing this call or traffic stop doesn't seem right, how many acts of kindness he may perform not because he's an officer but because he's a kind human being hiding behind a stern face and a badge, few know what that lump in the throat is like to be the first arriving unit on " The big one", yada yada yada. after a few years nobody really wants to hear about daddy's day at work, because it is probably very similar to every other day, it would seem, but everyday is very unique. You encounter unique individuals, unique situations and for 24 years you pull into your driveway after shift, put it in park, take a deep deep breath, take a 2 minute mental vacation and in a split second try to forget it all so that you can become Daddy again before you walk into your house, all the while taking for granted that this will be your temporary life until that glorious Retirement.

Never forget Fallen Brothers and Never Forget Daryll Haywood
He is still touching the lives of people like me who never new him.
May the Road Rise up to Meet Your feet
May the Wind be Always at Your Back
May the Sun Shine Upon Your Face
The Rains Fall Soft Upon Your Fields
And, Until We Meet Again,
May God Hold You in the Palm of His Hand

Sincerely,
Ken Church, FF/Pm

Miracles happen everyday, GOD takes care of those who take care of us.
That doesn't make the pain go away, for as humans we are indeed selfish, but if you look at the BIG picture, all will make sense.

Dear families of officer Haywood. As a motorcyclist and frequent Florida traveler It has saddened us here in Tennessee to hear of officer Haywoods death in the line of duty. When traveling to your fair state it is often settling to see the efforts of the FHP. People certainly don't like to get tickets but what is far worse is to see something happen as did to officer Haywood. Our heartfelt prayers are with his family (and extended family) there in Florida. From Tennessee our deepest condolences,
Chris Clayman

I was one of the many motorists caught in the traffic jam on I-4 Saturday Oct 2 following Officer Haywood's accident, but I'm not complaining. I'm from SC & had been to a professional conference in Orlando when I came upon the delay. I extend my sincerest sympathy for the loss of your state trooper. Thank you for the work you do to try to keep people safe on the road.
Teresa Burckhalter

As a fellow law enforcement officer my heart and prayers go out to Trooper Haywards family and members of the FHP. Please allow the following to help comfort and support our brother and sisters behind the badge in your time of sorrow:

Dear Lord,
Be with me in my role this day and every day;
Grant that each weary mile I patrol may ease a brother's way;
Let me be kindly to the old and to the young be strong;
But let me triumph over those whose acts are cruel or wrong,
And when my own last summons comes and I stand in Your court,
Lord, may my rest with You be long,
My punishment be short.

Alan Hill

We, in Texas, send our sincere condolences! I'm sure he was a great law enforcement officer and a great man!

As a retired member of the NYPD/Highway Patrol Unit # 1, I had the great privilege to have had worked with Darryl in the late 80's. I was saddened to read of Trooper Haywood death. My family and I passed the accident scene yesterday enroute to Atlanta and were hoping the trooper was spared from the horrific accident. Trooper Haywood is a hero. He served proudly and without hestiation. This world is a better place because of him and we could use more people with the qualities and dedication Trooper Haywood exhibited throughout his service. His watch is over now and he can sleep the sleep that has no breaking. My family and I will pray for Trooper Haywood's family.

Colonel Knight,
I would like to take a minute and let you know how sad we are that such a terrible accident has occurred. Trooper Haywood was always a pleasure to work with and had become a true friend to all of us in the Fire Service. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, his children and grandchildren, as well as the FHP family. I have known many troopers over the years and I have to say that Trooper Haywood was one of the "special ones", he was a shining star. His attitude towards the public which he served daily was of the highest regard. I will miss his smile, his calmness, his humor and friendship. People of Volusia County and the State of Florida lost a special person, doing what he did each and every day. Protecting us from others and ourselves. In this case, it cost us, his life. We are the ones that lost out on this sunny Saturday afternoon. Along with his family and friends, we have lost a shining star among us.

Although I never had the honor of meeting Trooper Haywood, it was obvious, by his impeccable record, that he was a dedicated professional law enforcement officer. To have served faithfully for 20 years in the great state of New York and, then, to continue his career with the Florida Highway Patrol, displayed his great love for serving his fellow man. I am deeply saddened by the news that another brother law enforcement officer has been taken away from us far too soon. I pray that our loving and merciful God will bring peace and comfort to Trooper Haywood's family during this difficult time. Trooper Haywood shall always be remembered, both in Florida and in New York, for his bravery, and for his many sacrifices to protect the citizens of both states.

Daryll was a good friend while him and I were at the academy together. He was friendly with everyone and not a harsh word ever came out of his mouth. He was soft spoken and always was kind. I'm sure everyone will miss his sweet nature. He is a tragic loss to the F.H.P.
His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear FHP-
As a police officer, I share with you the loss of your colleague. While many will sit in judgment of Trooper Haywood's actions and wonder if this loss could have been avoided, we in the business undoubtedly know that attempting to stop people that are driving like that is a required calculated risk. We all do it, every day we go on shift and by the grace of God we come home safely. As many that have gone before him, he made the ultimate sacrifice to fellow mankind.
Trooper Haywood and his family are in my prayers. While Trooper Haywood wore a uniform of FHP, all of us in law enforcement serve for the same purpose and share with you the loss you've experienced.
Sincererely,

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Trooper Haywood's family and to the Florida Highway Patrol in the loss of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and employee.
Many times we take for granted the day to day life of our law enforcement providers and forget the untimely tragedies that can befall these, often times overlooked heroes and heroines who place themselves in harms way day in and day out.
Although we are all in harms way at any given moment, these individuals personify what it means to know you are in harms way and choose the path that puts you there in order to provide a safe haven for those of us who do not choose the same path. Thank you Trooper Haywood. You will be remembered.

I want to take the time to say I am sadden to hear about the death of Trooper Haywood. I learned about his death via our dispatch here in Jacksonville. It hits hard when you learn you have lost someone doing the same job you do. I pray for his family and other Troopers that became part of his family.
Trooper Haywood will not be forgotten!

Tpr. Haywood and I were classmates in the 98th recruit class at the FHP academy in 2000. Knowing he was retired from the NYPD, and was now in the academy gave all of us a sense of drive, "if the old guy could do it, then so could we". Saying he will be missed is an understatement. Part of the FHP and a part of the 98th is now gone. Remembering his kindness, true sense of loving his job, and serving his community wont be too hard, as he was one of the best human beings I have ever known.
Res. Tpr. Craig Morse

To the Family and extended family and friends of Trooper Haywood:
I want to express my deepest condolences and sorrows. Having a brother and a boyfriend who are Deputies and people I hold dear in a number of agencies, I cannot imagine the pain and sadness you are experiencing. My prayers are with you all on your journey through this trying time. God Bless you all that wear the badge of courage!
Sincerely,

Florida Highway Patrol,
I just wanted to express my deepest condolences to all Troopers, in the Florida Highway Patrol, in ALL Troops throughout the state of Florida, in rememberance of Trooper Haywood who died in the line of duty, this past Saturday, in a vehicle crash, on I-4. As all State Troopers, local police officers, and fireman do everyday, Trooper Haywood, was just doing his job, trying to protect the public, and keep us safe, when these psycho criminals interfere with their jobs, and make it a lot more difficult. As Christ tells us, "A Man Hath No Greater Love, Than To Lay Down His Life For A Friend..."

I was sadden when I heard the devistating news about my classmate, my co-worker and my friend. Haywood will be greatly missed.

Dear Colonel Knight and Trooper Darryl Haywood's Family, I'm not a Trooper yet! but I know that Police officers get into their uniforms, strap on their guns and go off to work. They go into the most volatile of situations - human emotions - of grief, rage, hatred, fear, greed and sometimes psychosis. In fact, sometimes they do not come home. They and their families live on a subtle edge. Please accept my deepest condolences on such a difficult time in your lives. Gob Bless you, Trooper Haywood and all the Officers out there who puts their lives in jeopardy to protect us.
Sincerely,

We don't know why things like this happen to such good people. Is there an answer or reason? If there were an answer or reason, that answer or reason wouldn't be good enough.

ANOTHER HERO IS FALLEN. MY WIFE AND I WAS DRIVING IN I-4 WEST AT THE APPROXIMATE TIME THIS INCIDENT OCCURED, WE SAW THE TROOPER'S VEHICLE AND ANOTHER CAR IN THE DITCH SURROUNDED BY THE YELLOW POLICE LINE ON THE EAST BOUND OF THE INTERSTATE. HOPE THIS KIND OF INCIDENT WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN TO A PUBLIC SERVANT WHO WAS JUST DOING THE MOST NOBLE WORK TO PROTECT THE MOTORISTS AND MAKE THE ROAD SAFER. HOPE PERPETRATORS LIKE THIS MOTORCYCLE DRIVER GETS THE MOST SEVERE PENALTY THE LAW AFFORDS. WELL DONE TROOPER HAYWOOD!!!

I know my husband has sent in our condolences for Trooper Haywood, but as a wife of a police officer who served 28 yrs with The Broward Sheriff's Office and he is now working as a police officer for the Ormond Beach Police Dept. I wish to share a poem written by an unknown author given at the funeral of one of BSO's officer by Chaplain Braswell. Although Trooper Haywood will be greatly missed and leave a void in many lives: He is now forever safe:

LAST INSPECTION
The Policeman stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, Policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?" The Policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was rough and sometimes I've been violent because the streets are awefully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep. Though I worked alot of overtime when the bills just got too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgave me. I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I've never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the Policeman waited quietly, for the judgment of his God. "Step forward now Policeman, you've borne your burden well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF TROOPER HAYWOOD,ALSO TO HIS EXTENDED FAMILY AT FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL. MY PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU . SINCERELY, , , . C. WILSON , (NYPD AUXILIARY), JACKSON HEIGHTS, NEW YORK

It is with great sadness that we hear about the death of our good friends father, Mr. Haywood. We grew up together with his son in Flagler County. We spent great times together in town as youth. I remember going over to the Haywood residence and taking pictures before Homecoming around 2000 with Arthi Bannister. We have the state trooper car belonging to Mr. Haywood in the background of our pictures taken outside. Although this death is tragic and unforeseen, God has alma master plan for EVERYTHING. His timetable may not suite ours, but what can we do? Our prayers and thoughts go out to you and yours.
With heartfelt sympathy,

It is with the deepest regret that I send my sincere condolences to the family of Officer Haywood, one of my former comrades in the New York City Police Department.

To the Family of Trooper Haywood and his fellow officers,
Let me first offer my most sincere condolonces on his passing in the line of duty.
I first met Trooper Haywood when I was stopped for speeding on Southbound I-95 last July and was impressed with his professionalism and friendly demeanor. After identifying myself as a fellow law enforcement officer, we soon discovered that we had several friends in common when we were both employed by the NYPD and had worked in the same area. We spoke for several minutes on the side of the road and parted ways shortly thereafter. I continued on my journey to South Florida, happy to have engaged in conversation with such a gentleman and former colleague.
The treatment that I received from Trooper Haywood exemplifies the ideals of the law enforcement family and when something tragic like his line of duty death occurs, we all suffer a tremendous loss.
Thank you for letting me share my memory of a great man and heroic officer.

Dear Darryl Jr. and the Entire Haywood Family, Friends and Fellow Troopers,
No words can express how deeply sorry I am to hear about your enormous loss. I never met Trooper Haywood, but I am friends with his son, and that alone breaks my heart knowing a friend has lost a parent. Trooper Haywood lost his life protecting the citizens of Flagler County, Volusia County, Florida, and the United States of America. He is a hero in every way shape or form. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this terrible time. And I will be here for you if you ever need anything please do not hesitate.

It is with great sadness to hear of Trooper Darryl Haywood's sudden passing. Just reading many of the notes from friends that knew him show you the kind of man he was.

To the Haywood and FHP families---
Having grown up in an FHP home, I have many memories as a child of hearing that another officer was lost tragically in the line of duty. It is especially hard to hear now that I am serving as a duty officer, since it reminds me in the most humbling of ways that my friends and colleagues could meet such a fate. Even though I never met Trooper Haywood in person, I have nothing but respect for a man who places himself at risk day to day for the citizens he swore to protect. His loss is felt by those who knew him and by those who understand what he did on a daily basis. His death is both heartbreaking and unfortunate, but is also seen through my eyes as being noble and courageous. I offer both my respect for a fallen officer and heartfelt condolences to his friends and family for their tragic loss.
With deepest sympathy,
Duty Officer Jon Boles
FHP--Tallahassee Regional Communications Center

I had the pleasure of personally knowing and working with Darryl when he was a member of the New York City Police Department. Darryl was always a kind generous person, who truly loved his job and family. Darryl retired from the NYPD and moved to Florida with his family. It was only natural that he would have sought employment with the Florida Highway Patrol.
It is truly a tragedy to have someone like Darryl taken from us. He had the ability to have everyone like and love him wherever he went. I can honestly say that the NYPD has lost him twice, once to retirement and once in death. To my fellow brother Officers of the Florida Highway Patrol, I feel your lost. Darryl was and will always be special. I will miss him forever.
Fraternally,
Kevin A. O'Banyoun

I feel your loss, and I pray for you all. Just remember, his death was not in vain. I know we all feel that there is so much that we didn't get to say or share when we lose a loved one or friend, but we all must remember that they can still hear our words, our thoughts, and our feelings. God hears our every word, thought and prayer. Our lost loved ones will never really be gone because they will allways be in our Memories, Our Prayers, and still a part of our lives.
God bless.

To my brothers and sisters of the Florida Highway Patrol
Another "hero" of our profession has been taken from us by those who have no regard for the lives of their fellow citizens of Florida. Because of their actions a dedicated public servant has given the ultimate sacrafice.
Trooper Haywood was obviously a very dedicated member of your department as evidenced by the stories of his brief 2nd career with the FHP. His life was spent like many of us serving the public in our efforts to make a difference in our way of life.
I know he will be missed greatly by his family, friends and co-workers at FHP. As yearly visitor to you fine state I have always been impressed with the members of FHP I have met who have joined you as a 2nd career after retiring from another police agency in the United States.
May God Bless his family and all of my brothers and sisters of the FHP and look over them and keep you all safe .

I am sorry for your loss. I just relocated to Ft. Lauderdale from Massachusetts to begin a career in law enforcement. Every time I hear about the death of an officer from any state I feel like I lost a brother. I know and understand that it is a dangerous job, but there needs to be a way to put an end to officers being killed trying to serve and protect. I did not know this officer, but I do know that he should not have passed this way. To his fellow officers and family, I am very sorry.

I never met a person as nice as Darryl Haywood. He was a gentlemen and just a great guy to know. We worked together at Highway Patrol in New York during the 1980s. I remember how he use to keep his Patrol car, always clean and in perfect condition. I worked with him on car stops and loved how low keyed he was and how he showed the motorist respect no matter what the violation was. His passing leaves us with an empty feeling and he will be missed. My condolence to Darryl's family and may God Bless them.

Words do not begin to express the feelings that I -- as a Florida citizen and survivor of a fallen Arlington policeman who fell also preventing tragedy on the highways -- feel for Trooper Haywood's fellow patrol, his superiors, his trainees and mentees, his friends and -- most of all -- his wife, children and family. I can only hope with the highest of all hopes that your colleague, loyal employee, mentor, friend and loved one died doing -- as did my Craig -- what he loved to do, however short it may have been that we were all fortunate enough for him to have done it.
Real love stories never end...
With warmest, deepest feelings and wishes for soothing thoughts, beautiful memories and hope for serene patience until the next time we all meet.

My wife, son, and I were traveling West on 4 through the area from Ohio when we saw the accident 10 or 15 minutes after it had happened. We watched the news that night and were shocked to hear exactly what had happened.

Greetings,
My name is David Seawell and I'm a Captain with the Brunswick, Georgia Police Dept. I just wanted to pass on my department's condolences to the FHP family and the family of Trooper Darryl Haywood. Additionally, I want to let you know that my agency is hosting a motorcycle ride in honor of several law enforcement officers that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our ride, the 2nd Annual Ofc. Melvin Collins Memorial Bike Ride was named after B.P.D. Ofc. Collins who was killed in the line of duty April 15, 2003, while preventing an armed robbery. He had only been with our department six (6) months.
Anyway, our bike ride is going to be from Brunswick, Ga. to St. Augustine, Fla. We will be passing through several jurisdictions and felt it would be appropriate to honor those officers killed in these jurisdictions. Of course we couldn't list every name of every officer who died on the back of our event t-shirt so it was decided to list the name, agency and end of watch date of the last officer killed in the line of duty from these jurisdictions. We are proud and honored to be able to list Trooper Haywood on our event t-shirts.
I don't anticipate the need for FHP to be involved in our ride but Nassau, Duval, and St. Johns County Sheriff's Department are providing escort through their jurisdictions. The only time we will be on the interstate, without an escort, will be a short distance from the Georgia / Florida line to the first exit at U.S. 17. That's where Nassau County will pick us up. We're expecting about 125 motorcycles in our ride.
I extend to FHP an invitation to join our ride in any manner they wish.
Take Care and Stay Safe.
Captain David A. Seawell
Support Services Commander
Brunswick Police Department

I knew Darryl when he first came to Highway Patrol in the Bronx. He was like most of us young but always cool calm and extremely polite with the efficiency of a sharp razor. A man everyone could look up to.
Now he rides the Golden Highways in Heaven.
Lou Cirrotta - Sgt. Ret. NYPD Highway District

I was surfing the web today when I came across this article and it deeply saddens me to learn of his untimely death. I have know Darryl and his family since we were both little boys growing up in the Bronx New York. We had shared the honor of being best man at each others weddings and being godfather to each first born children. I had to smile when I read how Darryl could recognize the fire and police sirens as the passed by the houses along Grant and Morris Avenues. I can still remember playing hook and ladder 44 in his fathers house using two chairs and the ladder from he and David's bunk beds when we just children.
I had recently lost touch with Darryl and his family over the past few years since his retirement from the NYPD and my relocating to Massachusetts with my family. We always had a special bond and I used to tell him that if I had not seen him in years, it was always as if it was just yesterday that I last saw him. If there is any way you can pass this note onto the family, so they will know that even though he is gone, he will always be in our hearts. He was a special person and I would like Linda, Erica and Little Darryl to know that they are in my prayers and I will always have love for them and share in their grief at this time.
I know that Darryl died doing the job that he loved and doing it the only way he knew how, with no regrets. I will always have love and respect for Darryl, Rest In Peace Big Fella !!!
Love Always,
Kevin Butler

Colonel Knight and the Florida Highway Patrol, In the wake of this tragedy for Trooper Haywood's family, FHP, and the overall law enforcement community, I wanted to express my deepest sympathies, but also my sincere appreciation for the fine example Trooper Daryl Haywood was for the Florida Highway Patrol.
While working as a patrol supervisor in the Deltona area, I met Trooper Haywood numerous times along I-4. Whether it was responding to a crash or backing me or one of my deputies up on a traffic stop or motorist assist, Trooper Haywood always looked sharp, responded swiftly and professionally, displayed kindness with a handshake and a smile, and offered to stay and help out. The sad loss of his presence in our profession will not be forgotten.
To our brothers and sisters at FHP, especially in Troop D - Deland, I want you to know your law enforcement family shares your grief and sorrow. Your dedicated service to our community is truly appreciated, and we'll always be there for you.

My deepest condolence to your and to the Haywood family,
I t is so hard to read articles like to one for Trooper Darryl L. Haywood. I take allot of pride in teaching to respect the troopers to our students and know that they risk their life to keeps our streets safe.
Everyone dislikes when an officer pulls them over for a citation and they don't realize that these man and women are perhaps saving their lives by giving them a wake up call.
We congratulate your agency on a job well done.

I am deeply saddened by this tragic event that took Trooper Haywood's life, but more so, angered by the circumstances around this event.
It is an outrage that because two irresponsible drivers, trying to prove God know what, have caused such a terrible loss for both Trooper Haywood's family and the FHP.
It shows us how disrespect for law enforcement has become blunter. I only hope that all the weight of the law falls under this individual that has been apprehended.
God Bless Trooper Haywood's Family, you are in my prayers.
God speed the FHP

As a retired officer in Florida I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the Haywood family. I have worked as a traffic unit and was in close contact with many of the FHP members. As a brother officer I feel the smae pain the family does when things like this happen. Sorry for your loss.

We're from PA and while searching your site online we saw that one of your troopers was killed in the line of duty. We'd just like to send our prayers to the family in their time of sorrow.

To the family of Trooper Haywood:
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I believe that something good always comes from tragedy. Hearing of your loved ones passing hit me right in the heart. my husband is a trooper in Pinellas County. Every morning now when he leaves for his shift, I hug him extra tight and give him one extra kiss, because Trooper Haywoods passing has made me realize how much I take my husband coming home from work every day for granted. Things like this make us wake up and appreciate life a little more. God Bless your family.
Jessica Nichols, Pinellas County

My deepest sympthy goes to the family, friends and professionals associated with Trooper Haywood.
It takes an uncommon person to dedicate his life to the betterment of humanity. I thank him, and those who survive him, for making our world a safer brighter place.
May God continue to bless and protect you all.
Trooper Haywood's death may remind us that only the valiant make a true difference in this world, and our brother who goes before us has left a kinder path for us to follow. May we live up to the memory he has left us...

Came across this by accident. My dad was a police officer and my heart goes out to Trooper Haywoods's family friends and co-workers.

O.K..... It seems to me like it was just yesterday that "Lil' Darryl" and I,Steven A. Miranda were sitting down after i graduated from high school with Mr. Haywood ("Big Darryl") saying to him that we wanted to be just like him and serve and protect the nation from harm. It seems like just yesterday that i was sitting down with Mr. Haywood and he told me is this really what i wanted to do? He then told me "Steven you know i go to work every day and i do not know if i am going to come home that day, do you know how that feels?". Now look at this nearly 2 months later I am in a police academy. So i would just like to thank "Big Darryl" for teaching me everything i know today about F.H.P. and helping me to get one step closer to becoming one of Florida's Highway Patrol! Ms.Linda although i see you EVERY day and tell you how much i love you all the time i would just one more time like to let you know how appreciated you are to me after all you are my second mother, Im not even going to tell you how much of a great man your husband was because everyone else has done that, and plus you already know how i feel about him, but i will tell you this can you please pray with me that he will keep me and most of all your wonderful son safe as we begin a journey of no return in the career of Law Enforcement. We will need all the prayers we can get and i am confident that Mr. Haywood will always be looking down upon us to keep us safe. Darryl, My best friend in the whole entire world, I LOVE YOU! I really dont have much to say brother but i do have to tell you this just listen to your mother and PLEASE be safe I wouldnt know what to do with out you as my friend. After all you are my "brother from another mother",right? Erica,my sister, stay focused sweatheart I love you all so dearly and will ALWAYS be there for you all with and endeavors that you may encounter I PROMISS. Chole-"Pop,Pop" is in a better place, so say your prayers.I LOVE YOU MR.HAYWOOD.YOU WILL NEVER EVER BE FORGOTTEN.A PIECE OF MY HEART HAS BEEN REMOVED AND WILL NEVER BE REPLACED.I sit here to write this today to let everyone know that I am "little Darryl's best friend" and i saw Mr.Haywood EVERY day for the past 4 years until this very tragic day. It is very hard to understand and to accept that he is laying to rest, but your expected to just "suck it up" and go along with life but it does not happen like that and will not happen like that. Seeing someone every day and than all of a sudden he/she isn't there any more it is unreal, and i dont want to accept it although i must.I cant write any more the screen is beginning to get blurry. I LOVE YOU Mr.Haywood.Please look over your son and I as we begin this journey and most of all my future brother and sisters of the Highway Patrol to stay safe with all the encounter they have with people every day. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

-Steven A. Miranda-

(Future F.H.P. and Darryl Jr.'s friend for life)

Darryl we will meet again as we did in highway1 god speed to you

TROOPER HAYWOOD WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED

MY NAME IS DAVID I'M JUST A CITIZEN WHO HAPPEN TO KNOW TROOPER HAYWOOD. IN THE SHORT TIME I KNEW HIM HE TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY GOOD FRIEND... I WAS PROUD TO KNOW HIM.. TROOPER HAYWOOD BRAGGED HOW MUCH HE LOVED HIS JOB... BUT MORE THAN HIS JOB, HE LOVED HIS FAMILY...HE WAS A VERY CARING PERSON.. ALWAYS PUTTING THE SAFTY OF OTHERS FIRST..HE MADE ME LAUGH AND SMILE EVEN WHEN I DIDNT FEEL LIKE DOING SO..HE ENJOYED HIS FELLOW SISTER AND BROTHERS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, BECAUSE HE LOVED WHAT HE DID.. HIS LIFE WAS BEING A TROOPER .. IF DARYL WAS AROUND TODAY I KNOW HE WOULD TELL ALL OF US TO KEEP ON GOING..HE WOULD MAKE SOMEKIND OF A JESTER AND SMILE. AND I WOULD SMILE BACK... HE MIGHT NOT BE ON EARTH NOW.. I CAN EXCEPT THAT. TROOPER HAYWOOD..,DARYL.., MY FRIEND, THANK YOU FOR BEING YOURSELF. AND THANKS FOR PROTECTING US CITIZENS WE WILL MISS YOU, BUT NEVER FORGET YOU..AND LASTLY I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU

As a member of the 98th recruit class it was my honor to know Darryl Haywood. Darryl was a good and kind man. He shared his experiences and knowledge with many young cadets. Some of the wisdom he departed with has remained with me through the years. It saddened me to learn of his tragic death. Florida and the law enforcement community as a whole suffered a tremendous loss. During my career and life I have very rarely met an individual who better embodied the spirit of law enforcement. God Bless Darryl and his family.

Very Respectifully,

Todd Grantham
Special Agent, NCIS
