Before Hurricane Wilma struck the Florida Highway Patrol's Colonel Christopher Knight had response teams across the state ready to go into the communities hardest hit. After the storm 222 troopers responded to Southeast Florida helping fellow law enforcement agencies throughout six different counties. Troopers provided traffic enforcement throughout many of the communities where traffic control devices had been totally destroyed; they also provided security escorts for fuel tankers that required a quick response to areas most impacted by the storm. Security was provided at government distribution locations in Broward and Palm Beach County.

When Troop L's Major Miguel Guzman heard about a Florida Turnpike toll employee, Albertha Milce, was in dire need of food and water to help care for a small child with a severe handicap. Major Guzman quickly dispatched Trooper Gary Palevoda to the Milce home. Albertha’s five year old daughter, Carmine Hilaire, is confined to a wheel chair with a severe spinal injury. Trooper Palevoda provided a three day supply of food, water, and ice to the family.
