On April 3- April 6, 2001, Trooper Michael Van Leer and Trooper Kurt A. Hardley attended an IONSCAN Operator Course sponsored by the United States Coast Guard TACLET South Unit to become certified operators of the IONSCAN. They, along with the entire Troop K Felony squad, had previously completed the course to be certified sample takers. The IONSCAN is a contraband detection instrument, which can be used to detect trace amounts of various chemical substances, including illicit drug residue such as cocaine, heroin, MDMA and methamphetamine. The IONSCAN will help indicate where drugs are most likely hidden. Troopers Van Leer and Hardley are now qualified to run the machine when one is available, thus eliminating the need to have the Coast Guard come to the scene or process samples for the Florida Highway Patrol.
