Recently, Sergeant Gary Schluter, FHP pilot, was conducting an aircraft detail on State Road 93 in Manatee County as part of the Patrol’s Labor Day enforcement efforts. In a span of less than four hours, troopers in ground units had issued 77 tickets to motorists for speeding and made two drug arrests. As Sgt. Schluter was circling overhead in his plane, a large bird collided with the leading edge of the airplane’s left wing causing approximately $1,800 damage. Thankfully, Sgt. Schluter was able to land the plane safely without incident. Sergeant Schluter stated, “The bird failed to yield the right of way to my aircraft and fled the scene without providing insurance information”. You gotta have a sense of humor sometimes!
