Florida Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officers Lt. Doug Dodson and Trooper Larry Coggins recently took time out of their busy schedules to travel to the Peace Officers Association of Georgia's (POAG) annual conference -- their mission; to give thanks!

During the 2004 hurricane season, the State of Florida was hit by four major storms, one after another, which left millions without power and hundreds of thousands without shelter. The FHP was on scene along the route of devastation that every hurricane left, rescuing survivors, distributing supplies, and rebuilding the local infrastructures.

Gary Hill, President of the POAG and retired Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Captain reached out to Lt. Doug Dodson and provided meals for the hundreds of Florida law enforcement officers who were working during these details away from home. Without the assistance of the POAG, a lot of the officers would have gone without food and water. The trip to the POAG conference was our way to personally thank the members of Georgia's law enforcement community for their help in Florida's time of need. Lt. Dodson and Trooper Coggins presented the conference attendees with a presentation that showed the massive destruction and devastation that Florida suffered in 2004 and the logisitcs and behind the scenes planning that it takes to get the job done – something that all of the law enforcement officers in attendance learned, recognizing that destructive storms could affect the Georgia coast just like it did Florida's. Local Georgia State Patrol Post Commander F/Sgt. Randy Martin, along with many members of the GSP and local sheriff’s and police departments rolled out the red carpet and welcomed the FHP personnel to Georgia – a true hands across the border event!

On behalf of the men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol, once again we would like to say thank you to the Peace Officers Association of Georgia !
