The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has been authorized to waive the fees for duplicate or replacement motor vehicle license pates, registration certificates, title certificates, and duplicate or replacement drivers licenses, for the residents of communities in Lake, Sumter and Volusia Counties, who lost these items due to the tornados which struck on February 1-2, 2007, causing substantial damage to hundreds of homes and businesses in these communities. The waiver shall be effective for a period of sixty (60) days from February 9, 2007. In addition, the department is authorized to waive fees imposed by law for late renewal or applications for the above documents and licenses, which were delayed due to the effects of the adverse weather conditions.
Most of these transactions will take place in Lake, Sumter and Volusia Counties; however, some residents of the counties affected by the tornados may have relocated to other counties but would still qualify for the exemption. The customer must provide proof they were residing in these counties at the time of the tornados. All applicants applying for the exemption should attest that their certificate of title, registration, etc., was destroyed due to the tornados.
