Advisory Date:  12/03/07                                          Implementation Date:  01/01/08

Advisory Number:    R07-17

Effective January 1, 2008, the fee for an original license plate will increase from $10 to $12.  The replacement cycle of a license plate has been extended to 6 years for plates issued beginning January 1, 2008.

License plates issued previously under the five-year replacement cycle will have accumulated $10 of Advanced Replacement Fee (ARF) credit by the time the license plate is forced to be replaced.  All renewals, where a license plate is issued, processed after January 1st will collect an additional $2.  The January renewal notices included the additional $2 charge that applies to license plates with a five-year forced replacement.  Customers who opt to renew and replace prior to January 1st will be charged $2 less than the amount reflected on their renewal notice.

All plates issued to a biennial registration will be issued with a 6-year replacement cycle.  In order to smooth the collection of revenue during the transition to the 6-year replacement cycle, license plates issued during the following time periods on annual registrations will continue to have a 5-year replacement cycle.  For those registrations remaining on the 5-year replacement cycle, an initial $4 ARF credit will be shown in FRVIS in order to accumulate $12 at the end of the 5 years.

                        January – March 2008

                        April – June 2009

                        July – September 2010

                        October – December 2011
