Advisory Number:  R07-08

Effective July 1, 2007, Section 324.021(8), Florida Statutes was amended to state that dependent spouses of the US Military personnel will now be exempt from providing proof of insurance at the time of vehicle registration.  This exemption will apply when the spouse of a military member is stationed in another state or country due to military assignment.  The vehicle does not have to be in the military members name; however, it must be located in the state or country where the military member is assigned.

DMV Procedure RS-36, Insurance Verification, will be revised and posted on the department’s website at:

To claim this exemption, the registrant must submit a copy of their military orders and a letter stating that the vehicle is located in their state of residence.  Please use the same methodology for processing the registration that you currently use for military personnel and use the code “M” on the insurance screen to exempt the insurance.
