TECHNICAL ADVISORY

DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES

_______________________________________________________________________________________

To: Tax Collectors and License Plate Agents

From: Carl A. Ford, Director

Subject: Net Weight Zero

Advisory Date: 12/08/03

Advisory Number: T03-11

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It has recently come to our attention that the net weight of zero (0) appears on several thousand heavy trucks titled and registered in the state of Florida. Most of these appear to be International trucks, however, other truck makes may have also been affected.

The net weight of zero (0) is causing errors to occur when processing registration renewals. A message is returned which states, "Invalid Vehicle Type, Body Type, Registration Use or Weight Range for this Vehicle Class. Please Verify Combination!"

The department has systematically replaced the weight of zero (0) on all heavy trucks with a weight of one (1). This should allow this year’s renewals to be processed without inconveniencing you or your customer. The department will require these records to be corrected prior to the 2004 renewal period.

In order to capture the correct net weight of these vehicles, an accurately completed form HSMV 82105, Certified Official Weight Affidavit, or a certified weight slip from any business with official scales must be submitted to the department.

The department will write letters to the owners of those affected records and request they submit the weight slip prior to their December 2004 renewal. The customer can submit this information to their tax collector or directly to the department.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, please contact your DMV Field Support Help Desk at 1-888-529-1780.
