TEEN SAFETY EVENT AT MATER ACADEMY - Miami-Dade County
The City of Hialeah Gardens and the Florida Department of Highway
Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) hosted a teen highway safety
event at Mater Academy Charter School on March 4, 2008. Alex Gonzalez,
President of the DHSMV Advisory Council planned and coordinated
as well as MC'd the event. Sandra Lambert, Director of Florida’s
Division of Driver Licenses, addressed 200 graduating seniors
and delivered a heartfelt encouragement to the teens to always
buckle up their seat belts and to never drive while intoxicated.
She also urged them to always drive in a responsible manner and
to never drive aggressively nor distracted by electronic gadgets,
reminding them that traffic accidents are the principal cause
of teen deaths in this country.
The Florida Highway Patrol was on hand with their rollover and
crash simulators to enforce the importance of wearing seatbelts.
The Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) mobile unit provided its
services to customers in attendance who wanted to renew their
license or secure a identification card. Hialeah Gardens Police
Department was also on hand with its Command Center mobile unit.
Safety literature was distributed to everyone who attended by
the Division of Driver Licenses team who helped coordinate the
event.
The Mayors of the cities of Hialeah Gardens and Hialeah, Medley
and Sweetwater, as well as a great number of city council members
from each of those cities were in attendance to support this important
teen highway safety event.
