| On Sunday, October 1, 2006, a new
law went into effect allowing identification cards to be issued
to children five years of age and older. The Division of Driver
licenses in partnership with Midway Ford, Florida Highway Patrol
(FHP) and local news media inaugurated the law with an event that
very day. Examiners from local offices took a FLOWmobile and mini
FLOW (Florida Licensing On
Wheels) to Midway Ford where they set up and issued
137 identification cards, 68 to children under 12. They also issued
67 licenses.
Meanwhile, FHP directed traffic, conducted child safety seat checks
and issued 27 car seats to families, including 10 which replaced
ones that were discovered to be either defective or recalled. Television,
radio and local news media promoted the event and insured that the
Miami community knew about the new law.
The cost for a first time identification card is three dollars,
but at this event, the tab was picked up by Midway Ford. Parents
provided an original birth certificate as proof of identification.
Congratulations on such a fine event and many thanks to all the
partners and DHSMV employees for making it so successful!
